Research tells us that the best way for us to improve our reading skills is to practice daily sustained reading. Furthermore, there is a great deal of benefit that comes when we read a book we have chosen ourselves, but ONLY when we are reading a text at the appropriate level of challenge. Many students are disengaged in their reading because the books they select are too easy or too difficult. I will work with you individually to help you determine your appropriate reading levels. I see my role as a "matchmaker" for students and books, and it's a challenge that I love!
For the best results in reading growth, students should try to read for at least 20 minutes, 6 days a week. Alternatively, you can read for longer periods on fewer days. It is a home reading requirement for all students to read 120 minutes a week at your independent reading level and track all your reading according to the reading tracker.(See below). The weekly 120 minutes of home reading is extremely important and it is a large part of the homework grade.
